Answering Common Questions About Radiant Floor Heating

radiant floor heating questions

Learn whether radiant floor heating is the best choice for your new bathroom design.

In the winter, getting out of bed can be difficult when you know that you’re about to step into your cold bathroom. However, if you have radiant floor heating, you never have to worry about that cold tile again. Radiant floor heating is an excellent option for those who want to warm their bathrooms, but it may not be suitable for everyone. Read on to have common radiant floor heating questions answered and to determine whether the floors may be the perfect fit for your bathroom.

What Does Radiant Floor Heating Do?

Radiant floor heating slowly drifts to the top of a room from the floor (remember: heat rises), which keeps your space more evenly heated and comfortable.

Is Radiant Floor Heating Cost-Effective?

While it may seem expensive to install initially, radiant floor heating is quite cost-effective as time goes on. Underfloor heating requires little maintenance, and if you select an installation with a warranty, you don’t have to worry about any expensive repairs. You can also program your thermostat so the heat is only on at certain times, which will save you energy costs. Of course, each person’s savings will vary based on where they live and the insulation in their home.

What Types of Radiant Heat Are Available?

Electric Radiant Flooring

This type of flooring relies on electrical currents applied to a heating element made of coils that run underneath the floors. This installation requires an electrician and can be pricey, but it is relatively affordable once installed.

Hydronic Radiant Flooring

Hydronic flooring uses conduction, convection, and radiation via a liquid installed in tubes, installed under your flooring. You will need a boiler system to conduct and heat the water. This is best if you already have a boiler system installed.

Are Heated Floors Energy-Efficient?

In most cases, heated floors are more energy-efficient compared to forced-air heating. No heat is lost through the floors, plus distribution is more even. Because the heat rises from the floors, it helps you feel warmer sooner, which prevents you from dialing up the thermostat. Radiant floor heating is perfect for bathrooms for small spaces like bathrooms because it makes a significant impact in this small but essential space.

Is It Worth It?

If you are remodeling your bathroom or replacing your floors, radiant heating is worth considering. You will have to pay more, but you will gain energy savings, comfort, and resale value.
