How to Create a Coastal Home Design

A coastal home design utilizes lots of neutral colors and natural textures.

There are numerous ways homeowners can decorate their beach homes. But when it comes to design plans, there are distinct differences between what is considered “nautical,” “Mediterranean,” “tropical,” and “coastal.” Coastal home design is best for beach homes because it is intended to recreate and reflect the feeling of a beach. These homes are built to be full of light with soft, gentle colors and textures inspired by natural coastal elements. If you want to design your home to reflect the best of coastal home design, consider the following suggestions.

Let There Be Lots of Light

One of the essential elements of coastal home design is light. Interiors should never be dim or cramped but light, open, and airy. You want to create the sense that there are no boundaries between indoors and outdoors, so large windows, glass doors, and skylights are crucial additions. If you have window treatments, they should be minimal so as not to detract from all of that beautiful natural light.

Keep It Natural

To create that relaxed and natural vibe, coastal designs incorporate many natural elements. This can include wicker furniture, rattan, weathered woods, and fabrics. Rugs can be made of straw, seagrass, or jute, while fabrics are simple. No metallics or flashy textures here, but rather natural materials and light, billowy fabrics. Wood is common in coastal designs, but it is often white-washed or a light blond maple or ash.

White As the Primary Color

A coastal home design is similar to minimalist home designs in that less is more, and neutral colors are favored. You want to enhance the natural light in your home, and a primarily white room will do that best. However, you can still use color for your accents. Some of the most appealing accent colors for white are warm beige, khaki, light blues, greys, and greens.

Use Slip-Covered Furniture

Coastal furniture should be casual, comfortable, and straightforward. However, to add dimension to your furniture and match the open feel, slip-covered furniture in light cotton and linens is often the way to go. You can easily change up your design without buying new furniture. Additionally, you can clean your furniture more easily if you find that your family members bring some sand back to your living room.

Design Open Spaces

Naturally, a coastal home design encourages light, which means that open floor plans are encouraged. You don’t want to clutter the area with furniture or decor, but create a feeling that each room flows into the next. By knocking down walls between rooms and creating an open floor plan, you encourage this flow even more.
